The idea of swimming across the North Pole was very frightening. No human had ever attempted a long distance swim in such freezing water – it would be minus 1.7 degree Centigrade! My team decided to plant 10 national flags along the 1km route. They would represent the 29 people from 10 nations who had helped get me to the North Pole and inspired me so much. Most importantly they would break the swim down into manageable chunks. When we arrived at the North Pole I dived in and swam 100m to the Norwegian flag. And when I got there I said to myself:” Keep on going! Swim another 100m and get to the Swedish flag.” And when I got there I swam to the Russian flag and so on. And towards the end, when I thought I could go on no more, I just swam to the next flag. Eventually I covered the kilometre.
